Krokstad, Norwegian Bohuslän in the 1560s: Hans is born as a preacher’s son with a bright head and a keen interest in the mysteries of the sky. Thus he ends up in service for the Danish nobleman Tycho Brahe, first in the observatory on the island of Hven, and later at the emperor’s court in faraway Prague.
Tycho Brahe (1546-1601) is known as the founder of modern astronomy, but in spite of his precise observations of stellar and planetary positions he held on to the Christian geo-heliocentric system with the earth being the center of the universe. However, as Hans will discover, new ideas are developing.
