Atle Næss made his literary debut in 1975 and has written numerous critically acclaimed books across several genres. He is perhaps best known for historical novels such as Kraften som beveger and Doubting Thomas, about the Italian painter Caravaggio, and for non-fiction books about subjects including Edvard Munch, Nidaros Cathedral and Galileo Galilei. His book on Galileo won the Brage Prize in 2001. His fascination with, and extensive knowledge of, language, art, history and mathematics run throughout his work. Næss was born in Mysen in 1949 and has lived in Ski.
He studied English, Norwegian and linguistics and holds a cand.philol. degree from the University of Oslo. Before becoming a full-time writer, he worked as a teacher. His writing often draws on historical sources.
