A random meeting with an old classmate outside the funeral chapel takes private detective Varg Veum back in time, including to the popular rock band Harpers from the "Bergen Beat" period in the early 1960s. Then a murder occurs, and Veum must begin to unravel a red thread that leads him all the way back to his own childhood and upbringing. With rising tension, the reader is led to the surprising ending, which sheds new light on the entire course of action.
