Humour with a deeply serious undertone.
Jan Christopher Næss’s novels for adults range widely: he is equally at home writing about Frogner in the 1970s, ancient Rome or contemporary Mysen, and his characters are just as varied. Yet common threads run through his work: humour balanced against a profound seriousness, exceptionally crafted language, a keen sensory awareness and memory, and portrayals of troubled relationships between parents and children that leave their mark on his characters.
In his children’s fiction, he gives free rein to the improbable, surreal twists and delightful caricatures. In his non-fiction, he presents knowledge in engaging ways. He is an original and innovative voice in Norwegian children’s literature.
Jan Christopher Næss was born in England in 1964. He moved to Norway at the age of seven and grew up in Frogner in Oslo. After living for many years in Marker in Østfold, he returned to Oslo.
